Your situation is somewhat different from mine because of your e-reader, the catalog and the relationship they have to tags. For me, the social metadata tags act mostly as a partial substitute for full text searching. I have a better chance of finding books by subject when I can search the social metadata tags. I have another group of tags that are "mine" and are used in the more conventional way that tags are used.
Due to the number of social metadata tags, however, the tag browser is of little value to me, other than to just casually browse through (which can be fun). I have to remember my own tags as I could never find them buried in the others. Fortunately, I understand that some improvements in prioritizing or differentiating tags is in the works.
