I have "download social metadata" turned on and allow all tags to come in. I like having the tags, but I'm not willing to do the manual work, with each book, necessary to get them into shape. My library is too big. Most of your comments on managing tags as they come in are valid, but it is difficult to remember that you already have a tag for Biography & Autobiography when you see a tag for Biography And Autobiography. I understand why people often turn off the automatic tags. It's not that they aren't useful, it's that they are too variable and too much trouble to manage properly.

What I'm thinking about is some sort of improved tag management capability. I'd like to be able to merge tags the way I can currently merge e-book records. Instead of trying to deal with tags for each book, I'd like to be able to select multiple tags and then condense them into a single tag.
