very, very new to eBook publishing

I'm a complete novice in eBook publishing, though I've published a number of paper books. (http://www.brentcbrolin.com/BrentCBrolin/Books.html) I am delighted with the iPad, and want to make my next book an eBook.

I have a couple of very basic questions about how one starts getting from content to eBook:

The Calibre site lists HTML as one input source, but not XHTML. And the manual (or some instruction I read on site) also says: "The input format is first converted to XHTML by the appropriate Input Plugin." Do both of these references mean the original shouldn't be written in XHTML?

As I am not a programmer, can the book (it will have several hundred photographs) be laid out in a program WYSIWYG program like Flux? http://www.theescapers.com/

Big step here, but I'm looking forward. Thanks for the input.
