I often wonder what could have been had Apple developed an OS capable of running on the same computers as Windows and Linux. In other words, if Apple had chosen to focus on the software rather than the software-hardware controlled combination. I think there would be a lot more PCs running MacOS than we see today. But the short period of time in the 1990's wherein Apple allowed clone makers to build MacOS capable machines was quickly ended by Jobs when he returned. I remember that brief period of time as a time where Apple hardware was greatly surpassed by the more imaginative clone makers who listened to Mac owners and built what they asked for. I was a Mac owner until the end of the great period. But Jobs returned, and rather than build better Apple Macs he chose to kill off the clone makers and force us to have what Apple would let us have. I've never been sadder than then, and I reluctantly switched to Windows because quite frankly Windows PCs at that time far surpassed the capabilities of Mac computers. For over a decade now Jobs has kept Apple closed to any hardware not developed by Apple or approved by them. I used to hate Microsoft, but at least Microsoft only dominated the software. Apple arrogantly dominates the software and hardware. And instead of diehard Apple fans being agitated by how they are treated by Apple, they have developed this weird cult around Apple wherein any one who slightly disagrees with them is attacked viciously and slanderously. True, Adobe is a closed company and I don't care for them, although I use their Photoshop suite of tools. But Apple is more closed and more out of touch. Be honest, would most Apple fans have designed the iPad as a large, limited iPod touch? No. Most of what I read might be positive toward the iPad, but you can detect a lot of disappointment in that it was not a MacOS style of netbook tablet. And where are the MacOS netbooks? I think a lot of Apple fans would love to have one, but does Apple listen to them or care? Apparently not.
