That assumes they intended for the nexus one was intended to be a huge seller and the numbers they did were down to a bad job of marketing when that is a fairly stupid assumption to make.

The nexus one is useful to google in far more ways than simply sales figures, it gave them an enticing product to start their direct selling, it replaced the previous developer phone which was something fairly old by that point, it raised the bar for os version and specs so you see less low-end 1.5/1.6 android phones out there now and it gained attention to both google and the android os.

As time goes by and they release more hardware then it seems likely that their sales expectations will increase, but while they so clearly benefit from having many companies making android phones it would be somewhat foolish to try and hurt them by heavily pushing the nexus one.
