I'm finally back on line at home - FINALLY! Never did manage to get through to Verizon about my outage.
So called Time Warner - said the earliest appointment would be Thursday. So went to their local payment center and asked for a DIY kit. They said for wireless, a tech had to set it up. I fumed. They said wait - there's an opening on the Sunday afternoon schedule. I said fine. Sunday morning tech calls and says "I'm 10 minutes away" I say "come on over" And the fun begins. First he finds the wiring for the house is not code - but fixes it. Then he finds no cable box - but fixes it. Then he sets up the wireless router - and finds he doesn't know the IP address assigned to the router - but fixes it. Then we're setting up my laptop and it won't log on to the router - but he fixes it.
FINALLY - it all works! He was great.
I spent the afternoon ripping out all of the $#%&)_++*(&*^$# DSL cabling and boxes in the house and threw it out!
I'm tired now, but smiling.
