Most Magic Eye pictures are designed to be looked at slightly 'wall-eyed', not cross-eyed. So it's easier to see them when they're close to you, and then by thinking about looking past them you can cause your eyes to
uncross a bit and then see the image.
Normally your eyes' focus and their position matches. For Magic Eye pictures you need to have the focus closer than the position of your eyes would suggest.
For me, crossing my eyes is easy, but to uncross them requires a relaxation, rather than concentration.
