gone for a few hours, look at the mess..
@kennyc, i call 'em like i see 'em. as many others have also pointed out, you don't have an ipad, you haven't even touched an ipad, i don't care about your background (and mine goes back just as far), your comments are only parroting what you've read elsewhere. you bash the ipad (and apple) at every opportunity and refuse to listen to any other opinion. you're simply trolling the apple forum to stir up trouble. kind of remind me of someone else i had this same issue with a few months ago (she was a troll too). she's on my ignore list and congrats, now so are you.
i've been in the IT business for too long and seen the religious wars between mainframe hardware, desktop hardware, pda's, laptops, programming languages and more operating systems than i can even remember. what did i learn from my experience decades ago?
it doesn't matter what hardware/software/company you love or hate, time is going to pass and things are going to change. computers come and go. software comes and goes. programming languages fade in and out of favor. manufacturers disappear off the planet. it's silly that some people latch themselves onto loving or hating a particular thing and can't see beyond that. i have owned and used more computer and electronic equipment than a medium sized company and my shiny toys from 10 years ago are collecting dust in a box in the basement now. if someone has nothing better to do with themselves but spend time and energy hating any particular device, company, operating system, etc. it's a sad thing, they need to get out in the world and go do something constructive, because in just a few years that thing is going to wind up in a box in the basement too and all that effort spent with it. people ask me "which XXXX do you like the best?" my reply: "any XXXX that you like that gets what you need done." there is no "best". there might be "better" but "best" today is just going to be replaced by "better" tomorrow. my ipad i'm enjoying very much today will be replaced by the ipad 2.0 next year, i'm positive of that one.
the moral of this boys and girls, if you don't want to be called a troll, well, don't troll.
@richman, yes. the weight of the ipad is significantly more than that of my sony 600. the 600 is easily held in one hand pretty much anywhere. however it is not easily held and operated with one hand, to turn pages you either need to juggle it with one hand, or use the other to press or swipe.
so the ipad. i've adapted to holding it with one (but again you need two to operate it really) or propping it up or using the easel feature of the apple case i have. i will say an added bonus feature of the apple case, because of the rubbery material it is made from, it's relatively non-slip. i can prop it up on a glass tabletop against something else and it will not slip down in position on its own.
so for one handed use, the ipad is always going to lose against something that is smaller and lighter, it even loses against the iphone/touch. that's the tradeoff for that beautiful big screen.
interestingly, in ifixit's teardown of the ipad, they noted how it was perfectly balanced. apple designed the device so that weight was distributed evenly between front and back, and among all four edges. makes sense since you can rotate the device in any direction. if the weight was more on one side it would really unbalance holding it.
