The screen will be too small for comic books and most PDFs. It can view them. but it won't be a great experience.
The 300 has only been around for about 6-8 months, so there is no way to know if the battery will last only two years. My guess it will last at least that long if you take good care of it.
I haven't had any problems with mine. I think most of the problems encountered in forums like this one are due to operator error.
