In Vegas I took my iPad down to the pool to sunbathe. It was virtually unreadable. Not only that but I started playing a game and within 10 minutes it shut down due to overheating. A couple hours later though I moved into the shade and had a delightful experience with it. Even watched a netflix movie with it using the public wifi.
Therefore, it is not suitable to outdoor use in direct sunlight, so i'll keep my kindle around for that.
