Edmund, I can feel with you concerning stuff that doesn't work. Allthough I never had any problems with any Sony product I bought. Right now, I'm on my second Sony reader without any problem, but maybe I was just lucky.
I did have such problems with other brands already and know what you're talking about. In your case, I would certainly try to get a refund and get me another reader (maybe if you've checked for the crumb thingy first).
Here in Germany, the only reader you can get in stores is the Sony. I'm the "cash and carry" type of guy, meaning I order online only if I cannot get it in store (or if it's really much much cheaper).
Again, I'm sorry for your bad experience.
