It is important to have Calibre first import using the HTML decoder then create a
PDB formated ebook, then import the PDB file (using the pdb decoder) and then
create the epub, with the Jbook 5-inch output preference set.
It only takes a few minuets.

I must have an inadequate grasp of your suggestions, because I'm going around in a circle (or spiral, perhaps).
The first progression of steps (always using Calibre) per your suggestion was:
mobi ==> pdb ==> epub (formatted for JBL)
The second, per your further suggestion was, starting from the epub derived immediately above:
epub ==> html (via unzipping epub) ==> epub (formatted for JBL)
Both methods produced good epubs, but each file came up a cropper on the JBL, yielding the dread "file too big" error.
Are you saying the last set should have been as follows?
epub ==> html (via unzip) ==> pdb ==> epub
This whole business of converting to an epub, then using it to so circuitously produce another epub seems a little weird, but I'm fine with whatever works.
Cheers,
