I downgraded to R1.7.1 and then the problem was gone. I am back on R2.0 (0401) and I have not seen it yet. I downgraded to R1.7.1 because even a power-down/restart of the DR, did not solve the problem with the keys.
@ Matthijs: Could it be that some thressholds for discriminating between noise and press can get corrupted? I can not remember exactly what I was doing when I first saw it. Probably I was removing/reinserting the SD card a lot to get initial versions of FBReader and Xournal working. It might also have been connected to the PC via USB (for charging) at the moment that the keys stopped functioning. (hope this helps for reproduction.)
@ rfog: Did your keys stop working since the first time you saw it or do they work sometimes (e.g. after power-up)?
