That’s not a good thing. One site I visited said that perhaps the problems could all be solved with software upgrades. How do you solve overheating with a software upgrade, unless it’s by making more efficient use of memory, perhaps?

It's more the sun hitting the device that's harmful. The iPad has no cooling fan. But what comfort is there working in open sunshine? Do so many people do it?
You're right using memory or the processor in a series of bursts would produce less heat.
