If I wanted USB and a full OS I would no doubt get a laptop! in fact I have 2 already. the iPad isnt replacing them its replacing my PMP and my ereader and my DS.
A laptop convertible or not isnt a potential choice for me and the other tablets are currently all gimped in some way.

Yep, I'm in much the same boat, though I'm holding off on an iPad for a while. Of course I have the advantage of my girlfriend having bought one so I can tinker wither hers in the meantime!
I don't want a full OS, full PC features in a tablet as I have and will always have, a laptop as my main home computing option. I'd use a tablet for reading, document mark up, watching some videos, playing some game, light web surfing etc.
The iPad does most everything I want, but the price is a tad high (if the 32 GB model was $499 I'd probably jump), interface for getting PDFs, photos etc. on it could be better, I'd like flash support and multitasking etc.
So I want to hold off and see what happens with Android tablets, see if we get any solid rumors on what Apple plans to add in the 2nd Generation iPad etc. before taking the plunge on a tablet device.
