I use one of those too, but I keep forgetting to change the filter as it is only used for the kettle! Our tap water tastes fine, so I don't use it for that.

Our current kettle has an element embedded in the base, and it does scale up a lot less easily! It's also easier to clean when it does start to scale (vinegar & water boiled - works wonders for cleaning scale (and worksurfaces when you put too much water in and it all boils over...))
