It depends. If you mean the free public domain books that actually come from google books... no... not any more. Just go to books.google.com... search for what you want and you can d/l them in ePub format which will work on your Sony.

ADE does several things.
1. It creates a library of ebooks that you can organize.
2. It allows you to view/read your ebooks on your PC.
3. It provides the ability for your to d/l Adobe DRM protected eBooks. This is done through a file association the ADE creates with an .ascm file. When you buy a book from a web site that supports Adobe DRM like BooksOnBoard.com or kobobooks.com what you download is actually not the ebook... when you d/l it ADE will kick in in the background and send your Adobe ID to the ebook store. The ebook store will the encrypt the ebook so it can only be read on devices authorized to your Adobe ID.
4. It allows you to authorize your Sony reader to your Adobe ID. In addition it provides a method for you to move ebooks from your ADE library to your Sony reader. The latter function you can do just fine with Windows explorer also of course.
