Actually, I'm a fan of futurology and I've imagined a whole slew of devices which are not out of today's technological reach, this avatar is one of them.
I can envision a future where people are typing on virtual keyboards only they can see thanks to the implanted chip that links directly to their neuronal network. Of course, they'll also be able to record their thoughts in text files or audio files without going through a keyboard if they desire. This implant will also allow them to link to anyone on earth with minimal effort (assuming that person has the chip) and converse via thought and even send images of what they're seeing. At a certain stage, people will even be able to share physical experiences.

It's not that far away! Paraplegics are already moving cursors with computer/brain links, and the blind are being given digital sight in laboratories.
