They may, if your current bid is your maximum. If it is, you can either increase your maximum (most snipers are only bidding a small amount over the current highest bid, and so if your highest is higher, you win), or you can snipe yourself, a degree over what you expect that other snipe to be.
If your current highest bid is less than the maximum you've entered, and they snipe an amount less than your maximum, you win. It's the highest maximum that wins the auction (though it'll only increment your winning bid one step past their snipe, and not all the way to your maximum).
Sometimes you get bargains. (I've got good deals on lenses and cameras). Sometimes you just don't get anything.
