For anyone not familiar with the Kindle, the ads do absolutely nothing to show its function and features (as several non-Kindle friends have reminded me). One would never know it was advertising the Kindle until the last few seconds of the ad.

Well one reason for not producing a decent ad is because it gets you talking, spreading the word. You see a bad ad and mention it, next thing you know people have to have a look at it to see just how bad it is. Suddenly more people are aware of the company and product.
By the same token if you produce a really good ad people will spread the word and people will have to have a look (however it costs alot more). Produce a reasonable ad and it doesn't even get mentioned.
Or you could be like Apple and not even need to run ads. How much money have they spent on publicity for the iPad? I doubt not much, everyone was talking about it before the launch, Apple reaped the rewards of free advertising essentially. I mean I have never seen an Apple ad on the TV here in Australia but when the iPad was officially presented by Jobs, it hit the 6pm news.
