In the mean time on my winXP machine:
I un-installed the connect software and the reader drivers.
then reinstalled libprs500 and connected the Reader.
When windows asked me for drivers I chose those comming with libprs500.
prs500 info now gives me a similar text to its error message on my osx machine:
