I've found a less disturbing way of annoying squirrels. I sprinkle cayenne or chilli pepper onto the seeds on the bird table. The birds don't mind, but the squirrels sneeze and go away for a day or two.

So my strategy would be to lob a chilli grenade at the squirrels and rescue VR while they are sneezing. That way no one gets hurt.

NB The Indian army are experimenting with chilli grenades:
