I also dislike the way that "refute" is sometimes used inaccurately.

Quite often, I turn on the radio news and some corrupt politician, banker or suchlike is being interviewed. On being confronted by an allegation of misconduct, he indignantly says, "I utterly refute that!"
No you don't. A refutation requires evidence, preferably laid out in the form of a valid argument.
