I don't like scrolling for ebooks, and I'm not sure if Stanza can do it or not. But there are many other app readers.

As for infrastructure -- you can by Kindle books with the Kindle app, B&N books with the B&N app, Fictionwise from the Stanza or eReader app. Stanza (and I'm sure others) have connections to Feedbooks, Project Gutenberg and other sources of free/public domain books. I'm not sure there's another device out there with as many options.

Add excellent software like Calibre on your pc, and what few books are left without native handlers, you can convert.
