A CD-ROM (not CD-R) has a very long lifespan. Moreover, there is no physical wear on the playing surface, warping is only a result of external physical forces (i.e. sitting on them) and oxidisation is only an issue for CD-R's, not CD-ROM's

All you need to read a CD is a spin mechanism and a laser. Comparing them with older mechanisms which suffer from a great number of issues stable optical media don't is simply inaccurate.

You may believe they're obsolete from a philosophical perspective, but from a technical one...
