Thanks. That would explain things. I think that if there's a short story with important plot points or setup, it really ought to be included with the following novel. At least I'm reassured that I didn't miss something obvious.
Looking further, it seems that there is a collection of short stories,
A Touch of Dead, but it's over $20, even for club members at fictionwise!
Hmm... at Amazon it's $9.99. I'm tempted. Perhaps before I read the next one.
