The
Paris Meridian was abandoned in favor of the Greenwich Meridian at the Washington International Conference of 1884. I imagine the French weren't very happy about this, so in the discussions before the vote the British agreed to
adopt the metric system in exchange. Sounds like a fool's bargain to me
