We've been doing this for awhile now. We have a small PC sitting next to the TV, and it is set up so you can switch between inputs (Satellite TV and computer). On the computer we store TV shows that we downloaded because we weren't home at the time they were on. When we want to watch those, we just switch the input and the TV basically then becomes an extra large monitor for the computer. Go to whichever media player we're using (depends on whether the PC is running Windows or Linux this week - ask Chris, LOL), and put it on fullscreen. I've watched most of the Merlin TV series this way and find I enjoy the "on demand" (to borrow a trademark from Comcrap) aspect of it.
There are some drawbacks. Not everything we want to watch is available via utorrent - (HGTV and Food Network content for me, mainly).
As for Apple, I'm completely out of my depth there. I'm sure Chris could probably figure it out, though.
