I have K4PC and had similar problems. But on my laptop and netbook, I can dim the screen, which I do anyway, as full bright is waaaay to bright. Result? Readings is easy and pleasurable.
I sent in a suggestion to Amazon that they let us change the page color (and font color), as well as the sideground gray color. They said, they'd look into it. Being a retired programmer, it's not that big of a deal, but probably wasn't something they thought of, or high on their priority list. (And no, I don't think I was being politely blown off.)
The K4PC is still listed as "Beta", so when the "Gold" version comes out, maybe it'll have some of those requests.
Send a feedback the Kindle Dev team, they seem responsive. On the K4PC, it a drop down item on the Home page Menu button.
