My paternal grandfather was named Jean-Luc, but he changed his name when he got into l'école navale (Navy school?) and found out... well, that's kind of hard to translate without shocking your delicate American ears, or eyes, as the case may be.
Anyway, after changing his name he became Jean Artur, and that got him some nice flowers when he was working for the Transatlantic Company and traveled to New York. I think there was some misunderstanding about the spelling of his name
