Yes, that might be considered tacky, especially since it was a gift to him so it isn't your's to ask for back. Speaking of tacky though, I can't believe someone bought a book off of it. Who did he think was going to get charged for it, I'm sure he didn't expect it to be you, but you would think he would have expected it to be your father in law. Maybe he was hoping someone wouldn't notice.

What book did he buy? If it was "Dummy's guide to money laundering" you might have line on the 500K for your mother in law.
