Answering my own question, to build miniperl successfully you need to:
1) replace the symlink for /bin/sh to point to /bin/bash instead of /bin/dash
2) use the older ssh-based ./Configure pointed at the running qemu
The second step might not be necessary in the future now that I've done the first and have a config.sh for the DR800...
