There might be a solution.
The Monticello Drug Company buys "old" products that other companies did not want.

If only the old non ebooks could be bought up, converted, and sold anew by someone who cares. There could be peace and happiness in the world again.

Baen is already doing that, releasing several authors' backlist SF/F in affordable ebook editions. Unfortunately it doesn't always work as sometimes they can't get the rights. (See
Mountain Magic for an example).
