Mobile WiFi web surfing is the way to go; (fast) mobile surfing via cell phone connectivity is not readily available yet (at least here in Europe). That is why I wouldn't buy the Treo (yet).
I live in the DC metro Area, there aren't many *free* hotspots around here. Most of them if not all of them are commercial, like those offered by cellular providers such as T-mobile, ATTW, etc.. and local Starbucks. I know there are some @the Dulles international airport but I can't confirm if they're commercial or free. I think we're still way behind europe and japan when it comes to wireless connectivity (the wifi part at least) SO, basically, I use my TH55 to get on the net @home. Combined with palmVNC, it's a real life saver when I can't drag my lazy behind to my desktop computer. On the road, I mainly use the Treo600 to retrieve/compose e-mails and get directions off of Mapquest. The average dowload speed I get on Sprint PCS (CDMA 1xRTT) is somewhere around 40 and 60kbs, which is way better than what most GSM networks can offer, but not enough to surf the web comfortably and the connection is sometimes sporadic. The screen makes it even worse. Oh well @least it keeps the productivity up ( especially if you like playing games and going to them pretty women sites ). Nonetheless, the treo is an impressive machine but if you're contemplating buying it, You better hold on to your 600 bucks and wait until october/november for the Treo ace/610/or whatever it's gonna be called. Believe me, you're gonna hate the treo600's screen coming from the TH55.
