I think all ebook readers have pros and cons. It is usually not easy to uncover the 'cons' just by testing it for a few minutes at the retail booth.
The best way would be to rely on detailed user reviews, and only go for well-known and tested brands, such as sony, kindle, or nook. Because of the large user base, these manufacturers have a lot of incentive to keep improving the device with better firmware.
I've learned my lesson the hard way. I'd jumped on the opportunity to buy iRiver Story, which did look good. But the honeymoon soon ended when I discovered more and more issues.
Anyway, it may still be a fine reader. It's still early to draw conclusions. There's always hope that iRiver will release another firmware to improve on some of the problems.
