Yes, any V3 device can use the firmware for any resellers V3 device, and the same goes for the V5.

Again yes, but that is a very big IF. The internal hardware between the V3 and V5 is quite different, so it is much more than just a recompilation. For example the V5 screen controller is different than the V3, and the V5 has a jog dial that the V3 does not have. There are other differences as well, but those are two standout examples.

If you have your original firmware as a file on your computer then you can reload it onto your device. The firmware cannot overwrite the bootloader in your device, so there is very low risk in trying out different firmware compilations. If you do not like one, or it does not work for some reason, you can always reload any other firmware that you have for your device.

They all have their pluses and minuses. None of them are actually inadequate, but some may have strengths in different areas than others.

FB2 is my favorite format, since it is elegantly simple and is easily tweaked with any normal text editor, because the entire file including images is text. All images are at the end of the file in their own section, and they can be compressed formats like JPG. The images are coded in BASE64 so that they are also text.
IMHO, the LBook firmware or Tirwal firmware have the best FB2 support since they use CoolReader 3 for most formats. All the reseller firmware packages are still using CoolReader 2 as far as I know.
