Hi,

first of all you have to decide, whether you want to use a SIM or whether WiFi is enough.
There's a new "hack" available, which allows purchasing directly from nook. It just adds VPN to your nook. This works for WiFi and 3G.

The process of softrooting is described here: http://nookdevs.com/Softroot

In brief:
1.) Download "signed_bravo_update.1.0.0.dat" from http://www.multiupload.com/YWHOXQKYVS
2.) Rename that file to "signed_bravo_update.dat". Copy it to your nook (NOT the SD card, but the internal memory of nook).
3.) Eject nook from PC (right mouse button in Windows Explorer. Don't use "safely remote", but "eject").
4.) nook automatically should start the update. You see the progress in the lower right corner.
5.) nook reboots, you've reverted to 1.0.
6.) Download "bravo_update.dat" from http://www.multiupload.com/U0Y5IVLL7D
7.) This time, copy the file to the SD card, NOT nook's internal memory.
8.) Eject nook as described under 3.)
9.) Unplug nook from your PC. Turn off your nook (pressing off for about 5 seconds). Press and hold the upper page-flip button on the right. Hold it while turning nook on. Keep it pressed, until a message appears. It says something like "checking for update". As soon as you see this message, release the page-flip button.
10.) nook installs the "hacked" 1.2 automatically.
11.) Manually reboot nook.
12.) Now check out the pre-installed applications. You can update those within the application "Trook", if needed.

I'll come back to changing the SIM quickly. But those steps you already can do.
Don't worry, you always can go back. Nothing can go wrong.
