But coming back to softrooting:
It's way easier than it seems.
Basically, it's 3 steps:
1.) Reverting to initial firmware 1.0
2.) Flashing nook with "hacked" firmware 1.2
3.) Exchanging SIM and configuring nook to use your provider instead of AT&T
1.) doesn't need any command line interaction. You copy a file to nook's internal memory, nook automatically restarts and that's it.
2.) is similar. You copy a file, this time to nook's SD card. You press some buttons, nook restarts and that's it.
You always can revert, nothing can go wrong.
Now your nook has a modified/enhanced 1.2 firmware: You can browse the web or download RSS feeds via WiFi. And you still in parallel have your original functionality.
3.) is slightly more complicated, but easy enough:
You download the development kit.
Within that kit you open a command line and connect to your nook.
You configure nook, to use your provider (for my SIM, t-mobile in Germany) instead of AT&T. Therefor you just enter a single line of codes. You find them in the web for your provider, but I can give you the string of code as well (just need your country and provider for that). WiFi remains unchanged, but in addition you can use nook like our friends in US.
Only exception: You can't buy books on nook because of "wrong" location (outside US). But that's no biggy. You can browse the B&N webstore on nook and add books to your wishlist. Later, on your PC, you purchase the titles from your wishlist and download on nook (via WiFi or 3G).
Comment: You don't have to do step 3.)
You can stop or pause after step 2.)
