Well, what we expect from a book changes with time, I suppose that's what happened to you. I liked The Circular Staircase, but I found the style a bit awkward, as you say, and the Agatha Christie kind of mystery is not really my type. Haven't read The Bat, maybe I'll try it to see how I like it
