I suspect it might just be that the eReader market isn't diverse enough yet for the third party case-makers to step in and profit.
You see the same thing in other markets too -- for example Sony wanted $45-$60 for a simple case for the digital camera I bought -- but in those cases, where more people own the tech and are looking for the cases, third party companies are rife, and their prices tend to be much lower.
Low demand usually lowers the price, but not in this case, because too few companies bother to enter the mix.
