But I do want a tablet and not a netbook or laptop. I already have a laptop ,and it sucks to read on as the form factor isn't good for reading. A tablet has the form factor for reading, note taking etc., so I'll buy one as soon as there's one that fits my very specific needs.

Yeah, I hadn't included tablets in my thinking, but I think that only supports the fact that the iPad isn't really for anyone. It tries to be too many things, and ends up being restricted in too many ways. It can't be a netbook (mainly due to lack of multitasking and poor specs at a high price) it can't be an eReader (battery life, size), it doesn't make a good tablet (for reasons you've stated, and perhaps the multitasking issue again)... it's just plain better to buy whatever device is specific to your needs.
