Starting with the Reader disconnected from computer:
Step 1: Hold down reset for a few seconds.
Step 2: Slide power switch to turn on.
Step 3: IMMEDIATELY plug in the usb cable to connect to computer before the Reader can go through the rebooting process.
I had to try this a few times to get the timing right, but on about the 3rd try I got the "USB connected" screen. I don't know if this will fix your particular problem, but I figured I might as well suggest it. Good Luck!

Welcome to MR, Castor and thank you for making your first post be one to help someone.
When I saw your instructions, I remembered where I saw it. It was what some were calling a "brick" and I found the same instructions in
MR's Wiki under Sony 505.

Recovering a brick
Note: Some have reported that this does not work. You may need to return your reader to Sony.
1. You're stuck at "Reader starting up"
2. Paperclip the reset button then slide the power toggle.
3. When the screen goes blank, quickly connect the PC usb cable.
The Reader should reboot and show the USB connect in a minute or so, then you can use the Sony Updater to reflash your Reader.

Kevin, I hope this works and Karma to you, Castor, for being so willing to jump in and post a possible solution for Kevin. EDIT: oops have to wait until my Karma button lets me give some out.
