Most likely you'll have to revert to 1.0 before flashing the new (hacked) firmware. But it's a matter of just a few minutes and easy enough.
If you'd go for the original firmware update instead, you'll most likely be able to just overwrite the hacked one, without reverting to 1.0 before.
And even without softrooting you definitely should move to version 1.2, it greatly enhances usabilty (touchscreen, speed, ...).
