I can empathize. I have extremely bad eyesight, too, which is probably why I have a rather large collection of gadgets that give me access to books! It can be extremely frustrating when you can't have "normal" print books to fall back on when things go wrong, especially if you've spend a lot of time, effort, and money getting the tools you need.
I remember a few years ago when all three of my 4-track cassette tape players were broken, it was going to take the library for the blind a few weeks to send me a replacement (it's a specially produced player for a proprietary recording format), and the weather was too foul to walk to the local library for large print books. I was nearly crying, too.
I hope you can get your reader fixed or replaced.
