alas what you describe is hard scifi is star trek. where they try and keep the science right for the most part (I also love star trek).

for me hard sci fi is where THE CORE FOCUS of the story is the Science.

With Mission of Gravity is was the exploration of ULTRA High G worlds. What they would look like How things might live their etc..

Where the science comes front and center and is the whole point of the story.

its not a story wrapped with future science (thats science fiction)

its FUTURE SCIENCE wrapped with a Story (thats hard sci fi)

at least thats the kind of hard sci fi I CRAVE :-) hehe

I also love realistic "first contact" style stories. Now those are REALLY hard to find :-) (mission of gravity also fell into that category)
