Yes, mobile Adobe Digital Editions does not use the usual Linux font engine but only fonts it knows about explicitly. So the problem is that the built in Adobe font does not contain polish characters.

On some other Readers it is possible to add new fonts for mobile ADE. Since the DR800S is relatively open (e.g. has a SDK) it should be possible to discover if this is the case with its build of the mobile ADE. In addition, it might be possible to provide a global user-level CSS. See Needed: Customization for ePub, which applies equally to most implementations of mobile ADE (there is now a hack to allow Sony Readers access to a userStyle.css, and the Bookeen Readers have an ePub customization menu).
