Looking for Help

Hi – I’m looking for some help in making a purchase decision for a new eReader. I did have a Sony PRS-700 for almost a year before it became lost/stolen while on a trip to Europe. I was fairly satisfied with this device but not completely. The display contrast while acceptable was not the best. I have been doing some research and am currently considering the Sony PRS-900 or iRex DR800SG.

I am retired so total costs over the life of the device are a consideration. My primary use of the device will probably be while on trips away from home to view tourism books, i.e. Frommers guides, etc., plus recreational reading. However, I learned a valuable lesson with my first Sony. It went missing on day 3 of a 30 day trip and with it I lost almost 50 guide books, a dozen novels and all of my self-generated content such as area notes, itinerary, and travel document copies – very painful and worrisome.

I am currently frustrated over the availability and cost of content; so much so that I have considered waiting to see what will happen in this area. The fact that Amazon, B & N and Sony all have added proprietary DRM locking a user into their device or application frustrates me. Also, the price of an eBook as compared to that of the hardcover or paperback aggravates me when I consider the lower overall costs involved. That coupled with my diminished rights when buying an ebook are my biggest issues about delaying any purchase. An upside is the growing ability to get eBooks from local or state libraries.

Anyway, the device I want must be able access the local libraries, be able to display & manipulate PDF documents which include drawings or maps, store/display self-generated documents and have access to some of the most current books at the lowest available costs.

Any ideas or am I asking for too much at the present time? Sorry for the rambling rant….

Thanks in advance for your comments - Tom
