When I was studying Linguistics many years ago, they tried to teach us the 'politically correct' terms: 'milk tongue' or 'cradle tongue' - mother is such a sexist term! Never mind that usually it is mother who first teaches first language!
I don't know if university linguistics departments have changed in twenty-five years.
