I finally found the menu to turn these off. In the standard view, left click on the square "screen" icon, between the A icon and the search, and unselect show next/previous arrows. I have no idea why this is the only place to get at the option, but at least it exists. I generally use FBReader which allows very fine control over how the text is displayed and which keys can be used for navigation, but MobiPocket Reader is certainly "good enough". Adobe Digital Editions is a new entry, and it seems less customizable but is also interesting because of its potential portability (being Flash based) to any UMPC-like device.
