I'm chiming in here with a forgotten book as well...

The story took place at the beginning of the Civil war - I think there was a woman who was supposed to marry one brother but was in love with another. The family was split between Northern and Southern sympathies. I think the elder brother had an illegitimate daughter with a colored woman (possibly a family slave?). It was actually more of a mystery than a romance.

I seem to remember that the story was in a hardcover book, with a collection of 4 or 5 novellas/condensed novels. I'm thinking it was something like Reader's Digest Condensed books, but I looked through the list and didn't see anything that seemed familiar. I think it was written by 2 authors.
